On Thursday, March 28 and Friday, March 29, we will host a health unit covering the topic of physical changes during the pre-teen years for all grade 5 students. Boys and girls will be grouped separately, by gender, for an overview of the basic physical/biological changes that occur during this stage. We will only focus on physical body changes that occur at this age.
As we partner with parents, our goal is to support the students in this phase of life while not getting ahead of each individual family’s preference for pace and detail, as it relates to sex education. How these changes relate to sexuality will not be discussed. Naturally, your student may have questions, and we recommend that you be prepared to follow up with your children at home during this unit at the level you feel is appropriate.
Dr. Kelli Bynum and Laura Fillyaw will teach the girls. Coaches Chris Hasbrouck, J.P. Hogan, and Jeremy Beckham will teach the boys. We use the Proctor & Gamble “Always Changing” program specific to each gender. You can access information, videos, and curriculum HERE. Another series, Wellcast, is a wonderful resource if your family is interested in a broader range of puberty-related topics for a variety of ages. While we will not be using Wellcast, the information is presented in a student-friendly manner.
